- As a child, Emery was involved in an accident that left him disabled with an impaired arm
- In spite of his disability, Emery continued to participate in athletic activities throughout High School
- He was actively involved in baseball, basketball, soccer, and track
- In 1954, Emery placed first in a cross-country race won by Minto Memorial High over Saint John Vocational School
