Henry Whalen

2011 INDUCTEE

Henry Whalen was born in Bell Island, Newfoundland.   At the age of six, Henry sang "The Little Beggar Man" and continued to perform in many school plays.  He came from a family of twelve siblings who are all musical.  Henry has lived in Chipman for the past thirty-five years except for a few brief moves to the Toronto area for work and music.

At the age of eighteen, Henry joined the army.  He entered a talent show on Base Gagetown and won the award.  The following year, he made an appearance on the Johnny Cash show followed by appearances with Bud Brown and Fred McKenna.  Henry also filled in for Aubrey Hanson on Sunday mornings on a Fredericton Radio Show.  He also had the good fortune to open for Russ Wheeler on one of his Maritime tours.

Henry has played and sang with many bands such as the Country Troubadours' and Star Chasers in Toronto.  Locally, he has performed with Gertie Murray, Gary Fairweather, Oscar Egers, Tom McLaughlin and Alton Bell in various parts of New Brunswick.

Being very community minded and a very dependable entertainer, he has performed in most fundraisers in the area such as Cancer Telethons, Empty Stocking Fund, Heart and Stroke Foundation and has helped to raise funds for people who have suffered illness or misfortune in the area.  With the love he has for music, Henry has taught music to many children over the years and has also written some of his own songs.
