MINTO COUNTRY MUSIC WALL OF FAME INC.
Eldrice “Al” Goguen was born in 1928 in Rogersville, NB, but lived most of his life in Minto and Fredericton. He inherited his love of music and his ability to play from his parents, Edna and John Goguen. His Father played fiddle at dances and weddings, while his mother was active as a church organist
After mastering his first instrument, the piano accordion, Al learned to play many other instruments including the guitar, mandolin, and fiddle. It was his passion and talent for the guitar that forged his professional career. At left his music studies at St. Joseph’s College to join the Merchant Marines during the later part of the Second World War.
After the war he played with many popular New Brunswick bands including Vic Dovine on CKCW in Moncton, Earl Mitton and the Valley Rhythm Boys, the Diamond Trio and others. He performed with such renowned artists as June Eikhart, Marg Osborne, Bob Barry, Ron Goodine, Al Sherwood, Duane Pond, and many more. Both Les Paul and Chet Atkins had an influence on his music.
One of Al’s greatest musical thrills was to do a couple of solo numbers in concert with the famous Royal Canadian Regiment Band from CFB Gagetown. His musical career ended in the 1980’s although he continued to play at family gatherings.
Al and his late wife Vi raised four children, son Edgar, and three daughters, Kim, Karen, and Bonnie.
He died in 1997 in his 69th year. Al was inducted into the New Brunswick Country Music Hall of Fame in 2001.
